Geologic period: Devonian
Tiktaalik, a lobe-finned fish from the Devonian
About this image:
Tiktaalik was a Devonian lobe-finned fish whose anatomy shows important similarities with four-legged animals that would later move onto land full time.
Did you know?
It's possible that Tiktaalik was able to partly or completely bear its weight on land using its lobed fins, but scientists believe it was primarily aquatic. The lobed fins and its self-supporting gait on land may have been an adaptation to life in oxygen-poor ponds and swamps, or in drying areas that required Tiktaalik to move from pond to pond.
