Did you know?
Although these amazing big cats are sometimes referred to as "saber-toothed tigers," they were not related to tigers -- past or present -- in any way. They belong to the subfamily Machairodontinae, which evolved in central Africa in the Miocene. True tigers belong to the subfamily Pantherinae, and include a number of surviving family members, including the lion, tiger, jaguar, leopard, clouded leopard, Bornean clouded leopard and snow leopard. There are no living members of Smilodon's subfamily of Machairodontinae.
