Deep-Sea Mural, ratfish detail
Geologic period: Modern
Ratfish, giant red mysid, spot prawn and fragile pink urchins
About this image:
Some deep-water residents of the Channel Islands National Park are fairly gruesome looking. (See the lowly hagfish, for example....)
Ratfish, by comparison, come off looking somewhat whimsical and charming, with a pointed nose and colorful pattern. If pestered by divers, however, all sense of whimsy ends: The ratfish can deliver a mildly toxic wound from its fins.
