Eurypterids
Southern Methodist University in Dallas has a widely respected course of undergraduate and graduate study in paleontology, and Karen has been fortunate to work with several of the faculty and students at SMU. Most recently, she did a reconstruction of Aetodactylus halli, a new toothed pterosaur, for T. S. Miller, postdoctoral research fellow in SMU's Earth Sciences Department.
Other research projects underway at SMU include early evolution of sea turtles, origins and evolution of snakes and mosasaurs, the sauropod dinosaurs of the Early Cretaceous of Texas, Late Cretaceous faunas of Mexico, oviraptosaur and ornithomimosaur dinosaur systematics, floral and faunal studies of the Texas Cretaceous, Tertiary paleoclimates, and small mammals of Africa. Two recent peer-reviewed publications have resulted from graduate student class projects.
