White Sands Earless Lizard, color variations

The earless lizard of White Sands National Monument isn't really really earless: It lacks an obvious external ear opening to allow it to burrow into sand easily. The earless lizards at White Sands vary greatly in color, often among populations only a few hundred meters apart: The further into the gypsum dune field you travel, the lighter the lizard are... making them harder to spot on the sand.

Karen's all-digital workflow means visitors can see the exact same animal on a mural, in a life-like animated video, as a touchable bronze sculpture, and more! By working and modeling with your science team's input, every animal in every use is exactly correct and aesthetically pleasing. See Karen's sculpture of this earless lizard.
